Brooklyn NY Braces are not what they used to be!

The time has come to take your child to the orthodontist. But you remember those horrible nights when you were in bed with your huge braces facemask that covered your entire head. They called you brace face, you couldn’t go to the prom, you couldn’t eat anything but chicken soup through a straw, your life was in the retainer gutters. Well… maybe we’ve gone too far. But as a caring mom, you probably think about how braces will look on your child and we want you to know that in a recent study amongst mothers, 86% of moms reported that braces are cooler today than when they were young.

69% of mommies even said that wearing braces make their kids cool! Can you believe that? An orthodontic treatment actually heightens your social life!

Where that coolness factor is coming from? Mostly because kids have different colors to choose from and customize their braces appearance. This helps them feel good about the process and even make them feel involved in the treatment.

Find A Local Business for Brooklyn NY Braces!

Teeth are one of the most important attributes to your body. Your smile truly is the window to your soul - and it's important that your teeth are aligned correctly, and that they feel good to you! Other reason for braces, besides cosmetic reasons, is simply because crooked teeth lead to more and more problems.

This is going to cause a lot of grief and pain in the end so it's best to just get it fixed while you can. Orthodontists are specialty "dentists" that don't just fix regular problems such as decay or cavities. Dental Orthopedics is a specialty of dentistry that is involved with the field and treatment of malocclusions (improper bites), which could be a result of tooth irregularity, disproportionate jaw or even both!

There are many new technologies in the field, like invisalign, a new type of braces that are invisible or "see through". Many people wear these, even celebs!

These problems are nothing new to be honest. Problems with irregular teeth have said to be happening since as early as 1000 B.C. However, the difference now is that now we have the technology needed to fix this problem for you and make your smile completely stunning!

Common Orthodontic Problems. Do you need Orthodontic treatment?

Every person has a unique teeth structure or jaw structure and when a person’s teeth do not fit together properly, orthodontic treatment may be necessary to straighten teeth and promote ideal function.

But don’t worry! That’s what we’re here for. The dedicated staff at Hanson Place Orthodontics gathered the most common orthodontic problems, so you’d have a better idea if you or your family members need orthodontic care.

Underbite – the lower jaw extends out, causing the lower front teeth to sit in front of the upper front teeth.

Spacing – this problem may be may be caused by missing teeth and may only be a cosmetic issue.

Protrusion – the appearance and function of your teeth are impacted by upper front teeth protrusion. It is characterized by the upper teeth extending too far forward or lower teeth not extending far enough forward.

Crowding – occurs when teeth have insufficient room to erupt from the gum. Crowding can often be corrected by expansion, and many times, tooth removal can be avoided.

Crossbite – In a crossbite, the upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth, which may cause tooth stratification and misaligned jaw growth.

Overbite – In an overbite, the upper front teeth extend out over the lower front teeth, sometimes causing the lower front teeth to bite into the roof of the mouth.

Openbite – Proper chewing is impacted by an openbite, in which the upper and lower front teeth do not overlap. Openbites may be caused by habits such as thumb sucking or tongue thrusting.

Midlines – Dental midlines that do not match are evident when the back bite does not fit and match appropriately. This may negatively impact jaw and proper dental function.

Keep your retainer happy and fresh and clean. How to clean retainers

Keeping your retainers in a good shape takes a lot of responsibility. Retainers are covered with the many substances that are found in our mouth, like saliva, plaque and bacteria. The things you eat also tend to get a ride on your retainer and unless you clean it thoroughly, the retainer can produce bad breath.

During the retention phase, it is important to brush your teeth as they can accumulate food particles and plaque, and it wouldn’t hurt to brush your retainer as well.

How to clean retainers? Once a day, you should soak your appliance in a glass of room temperature tap water with a denture-cleaning tablet, such as Polident or Efferdent. This will help prevent plaque build-up and oral infections and will keep your appliance tasting better. Do not use hot water as it can distort the appliance.

When you are using your retainer, remember to store it in a protective case in order to avoid cracking and denting.

Is Corrective Jaw Surgery the right answer for you?

When patients have excessive difficulty with chewing, talking, sleeping or other routine activities, a Corrective jaw surgery (orthognathic surgery) might be the solution. This procedure treats and corrects abnormalities of the facial bones, specifically the jaws and the teeth and, in conjunction with orthodontic treatment, will improve the overall appearance of the facial profile.

The word “surgery” never sounds too comforting but computerized treatment planning minimizes treatment times, recovery periods and the overall efficacy of your surgery.

State-of-the-art materials such as titanium plates and miniature screws provide stability, strength and predictability to your treatment. These advances in technology, procedures and equipment reduce post-surgical recovery time, thus allowing patients to return to their normal routines soon after the surgery.

Orthognathic surgery may be unnecessary if orthodontic treatment can correct the problem. With the latest advances in orthodontics, this is sometimes the case. If you normal daily activities make you suffer, log on to www.hansonplaceortho.com, sceduale an appointment and our expert team of orthodontists will determine if orthognathic surgery is the correct treatment option for you.

Invisalign - Straighten your teeth with clear, invisible braces

Many patients who need orthodontic treatment refuse to consider traditional braces which can lead to many dental health problems. But with the latest technology, everyone can happily and comfortably improve their smile with Invisalign.

Invisalign is the clear way to straighten teeth without braces, using aligners. Aligners are removable and virtually invisible, which means you can straighten your teeth without anyone knowing; and you can still eat and drink what you want. Also, you can brush and floss normally to maintain healthy gums and teeth; and there are no wires, metal or brackets to cause mouth abrasions.

What is Invisalign? It is basically an invisible way to straighten your teeth without using braces. Invisalign is series of clear, removable, custom-made aligners that uses no metal wires or brackets and is custom-made for comfort.

How Does Invisalign Work? You wear each set of clear aligners for about two weeks and remove them only when you eat, drink, brush and floss. You will notice that your teeth will move gradually each week and the total treatment time averages between 6-15 months. That's it!

How to Floss with Braces

If you have braces, you might notice that small pieces of food get caught sometimes between the wires. This can create some health issues, cause decay and bad breath. It is very important to floss in order to protect you mouth and get a step closer that that beautiful smile.

Flossing. You should floss at least once a day. It might get a little complicated at first, but we can go through it together… The floss needs to be pulled under the archwire. A Floss Threader facilitates this.

Pull the floss through the threader and push the floss threader under the archwire and pull the floss through.

Pull the floss up between the teeth and gently move it up and down the side of both teeth. Remember to move it up all the way under the gums. When you are done, pull the floss and use a different section of it for the next tooth.

Smile! It's Digital X-ray

The goal of our office is to offer the highest standard of orthodontic care to our patients. We strive to work together to establish happiness, self-esteem, comfort and optimal oral health for our patients and to be efficient and encouraging while creating beautiful smiles.

This is the reason why we use only the latest and most advanced technologies. Take for example our Digital X-ray imaging system. X-ray is one of the basics in Orthodontics. It allows us to find teeth that are not in the right position or to crowded to break through the gums. We can check the location of permanent teeth in the jaw and plan treatment for teeth that are not lined up.

Remember when the dentist/orthodontist used to take X-ray and than dip it in a cup of water so it will be ready? Today, digital X-rays are immediately transferred into a computer. The images are enhanced and we can get a closer look at your mouth. But the best thing is that less radiation is used to produce digital X-rays.

Brushing with Braces

Oral hygiene is the number 1 factor for a healthy mouth. But when you have braces, it is even more important to maintain a good oral care throughout of your treatment, with some little extras.

Braces, wires, bands and retainers can all trap food particles and make it difficult to brush or floss away plaque. Careful brushing and flossing, preferably after every meal and snack, is the best way to prevent plaque building up. Tooth decay and gum disease. And really, who wants gum disease?

Brushing. The outside of the teeth should be brushed at a straight angle, using circular vibrating motions. You should also clean the area between the gums and braces by angling the brush down (up for the lower jaw, down for the lower jaw). Remember to brush the surface and the inside of the teeth as well!

Here is a short video that can help you understand the basics of brushing with braces:
