Braces - What to eat and how to clean

Your teeth may be a little sore for the first week in braces, so we recommend sticking to a soft food diet until the discomfort subsides. What to eat while in braces? You can still eat just anything! (although there are a few exceptions.)

You should avoid hard foods, such as ice and pizza crust, as well as sticky foods, including licorice and caramels. These foods can damage wires and brackets. It is also important to minimize foods high in sugar content, like ice cream and cookies and cookie ice cream. You should also reduce sugary drinks such as coke to once a day.

If you get food stuck under the orthodontic wires you can use an interdental toothbrush. The “proxabrush” helps keeping your teeth, braces and gums clean and healthy and you should use this device slowly and carefully so you don’t damage your braces.

At Hanson Place Orthodontics we know how much your smile means to you and we want you to have the perfect smile. That is the reason we strive to work together and establish happiness, self-esteem, comfort and optimal oral health for all our patients and to be efficient and encouraging while creating beautiful smiles.
