Even Ancient peoples wanted straight teeth. Braces have been discovered on Egyptian mummies with metal bands wrapped around their teeth and catgut wires used to close gaps! Orthodontic Health month is in full throttle and Halloween is just around the corner so here at Hanson Place we decided to bring you a special holiday treat with the help of the American Association of Orthodontists that came up with a few yummy recopies to help your braces and your health through the candy coated Halloween.

We’ve tried a couple of the braces recipes back at home and this one was really easy to prepare and even easier to eat. So there you have it, a braces friendly recipe:

Almond Sugar Cookie Cut-Outs!

Celebrate Orthodontic Health month with this easy-to-assemble dough! Shape it into ghosts for Halloween!

Ingredients:

1 cup butter (softened)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
2 1/2 cups flour
1 egg
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
1 teaspoon baking soda

Directions:

Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy, then add the egg, vanilla extract and almond extract flavorings.
Combine the dry ingredients in separate bowl.
Next, add the dry ingredients (by 1/2 cup measurements) to the butter/sugar mixture.
Mix with a mixer on medium speed.
Chill the dough for 2 - 3 hours or overnight, or “quick chill” in the freezer until very firm, for about 30 - 45 minutes.

To Bake:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Separate the dough into fourths and roll each section until it is about 1/8 - 1/4 inch thickness, and using a 2 1/2 inch ghost-shaped cookie cutter, cut into desired shape.
Bake 7 - 9 minutes or until the edges just begin to brown.

How to handle orthodontic emergencies at home?

Think you have an Orthodontic emergency? First of all, don’t worry. There are very few orthodontic emergencies and most common problems can be treated at home.

After visiting our clinic, you might feel that your teeth a sore. It's normal! While adjusting to your new braces you can take any non-aspirin pain relievers. Remember that a warm wash cloth, heating pad or warm salt water can help reduce pain.

If your braces cause irritation, try moving the wires using an eraser or a cotton swab. If it doesn’t help, try to cover the end of it with cotton or a small amount of wax. If the wire is still painful, you can cut it.

If a bracket comes loose and you must cut the wire, use fingernail clippers that have been washed and sterilized and call us to schedule a repair treatment. It’s also common that a separator comes out during treatment or at home. Just give us a call and we’ll see if it needs to be replaced

So what does it all mean? What's in a toothpaste?

Let’s start with the most popular ingredient – Fluoride!

Fluoride is the most common active ingredient in most toothpastes. Fluoride prevents cavities and effects dental enamel and bones. Fluoride can be found in our water, and fluoride tablets are given to children in order to prevent future tooth decay and cavities. Although some groups disagree with mixing fluoride with drinking water, some dentists say that 50% of children between the ages 5 and 17 have never had a cavity because of fluoride in their tooth enamel.

Triclosan is a relatively new guest in the world of oral hygiene. Triclosan is used in deodorants for a very long time, but introduced to toothpastes only 15 years ago. Every person has a unique teeth structure or jaw structure and when a person’s teeth do not fit together properly, orthodontic treatment may be necessary to straighten teeth and promote ideal function.

But don’t worry! That’s what we’re here for. The dedicated staff at Hanson Place Orthodontics gathered the most common orthodontic problems, so you’d have a better idea if you or your family members need orthodontic care.

Underbite – the lower jaw extends out, causing the lower front teeth to sit in front of the upper front teeth.

Spacing – this problem may be may be caused by missing teeth and may only be a cosmetic issue.

Protrusion – the appearance and function of your teeth are impacted by upper front teeth protrusion. It is characterized by the upper teeth extending too far forward or lower teeth not extending far enough forward.

Crowding – occurs when teeth have insufficient room to erupt from the gum. Crowding can often be corrected by expansion, and many times, tooth removal can be avoided.

Crossbite – In a crossbite, the upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth, which may cause tooth stratification and misaligned jaw growth.

Overbite – In an overbite, the upper front teeth extend out over the lower front teeth, sometimes causing the lower front teeth to bite into the roof of the mouth.

Openbite – Proper chewing is impacted by an openbite, in which the upper and lower front teeth do not overlap. Openbites may be caused by habits such as thumb sucking or tongue thrusting.

Midlines – Dental midlines that do not match are evident when the back bite does not fit and match appropriately. This may negatively impact jaw and proper dental function.

Braces - What to eat and how to clean

Your teeth may be a little sore for the first week in braces, so we recommend sticking to a soft food diet until the discomfort subsides. What to eat while in braces? You can still eat just anything! (although there are a few exceptions.)

You should avoid hard foods, such as ice and pizza crust, as well as sticky foods, including licorice and caramels. These foods can damage wires and brackets. It is also important to minimize foods high in sugar content, like ice cream and cookies and cookie ice cream. You should also reduce sugary drinks such as coke to once a day.

If you get food stuck under the orthodontic wires you can use an interdental toothbrush. The “proxabrush” helps keeping your teeth, braces and gums clean and healthy and you should use this device slowly and carefully so you don’t damage your braces.

Keep your retainer happy and fresh and clean. How to clean retainers

Keeping your retainers in a good shape takes a lot of responsibility. Retainers are covered with the many substances that are found in our mouth, like saliva, plaque and bacteria. The things you eat also tend to get a ride on your retainer and unless you clean it thoroughly, the retainer can produce bad breath.

During the retention phase, it is important to brush your teeth as they can accumulate food particles and plaque, and it wouldn’t hurt to brush your retainer as well.

How to clean retainers? Once a day, you should soak your appliance in a glass of room temperature tap water with a denture-cleaning tablet, such as Polident or Efferdent. This will help prevent plaque build-up and oral infections and will keep your appliance tasting better. Do not use hot water as it can distort the appliance.

When you are using your retainer, remember to store it in a protective case in order to avoid cracking and denting.

How to Floss with Braces

If you have braces, you might notice that small pieces of food get caught sometimes between the wires. This can create some health issues, cause decay and bad breath. It is very important to floss in order to protect you mouth and get a step closer that that beautiful smile.

Flossing. You should floss at least once a day. It might get a little complicated at first, but we can go through it together… The floss needs to be pulled under the archwire. A Floss Threader facilitates this.

Pull the floss through the threader and push the floss threader under the archwire and pull the floss through.

Pull the floss up between the teeth and gently move it up and down the side of both teeth. Remember to move it up all the way under the gums. When you are done, pull the floss and use a different section of it for the next tooth.

Brushing with Braces

Oral hygiene is the number 1 factor for a healthy mouth. But when you have braces, it is even more important to maintain a good oral care throughout of your treatment, with some little extras.

Braces, wires, bands and retainers can all trap food particles and make it difficult to brush or floss away plaque. Careful brushing and flossing, preferably after every meal and snack, is the best way to prevent plaque building up. Tooth decay and gum disease. And really, who wants gum disease?

Brushing. The outside of the teeth should be brushed at a straight angle, using circular vibrating motions. You should also clean the area between the gums and braces by angling the brush down (up for the lower jaw, down for the lower jaw). Remember to brush the surface and the inside of the teeth as well!
